PUMA X VIVID VISIONS BY ANDREW BURGESS: A TEXTILE-TO-TEXTILE FASHION EXPERIMENT

Global sports company PUMA reveals a new collaboration with US upcycler, Andrew Burgess and his brand VIVID VISIONS with the launch of an experimental one-off capsule collection

Working closely with PUMA, Andrew has created five designs, each crafted entirely from PUMA’s recycled polyester RE:FIBRE fabric. Shot on models in London’s iconic York Hall Leisure Centre, the art direction combines futuristic fashion design with retro sports nostalgia, paying homage to PUMA’s roots, while celebrating the brand and Andrews’ commitment to sustainable textile innovation

The creative imagery shows the garments repeated over and overreflecting the infinite possibilities of circular fashion, where old garments are transformed into new ones, again and again

Andrew, known for his talent in repurposing unwanted and damaged clothes, was inspired by PUMA's factory partners during a visit to Turkey. During his visit, Andrew witnessed first-hand the impressive progress PUMA has made in scaling up circular textile technology and produced his own bespoke RE:FIBRE fabric from recycled polyester garments.

Seeing the innovation, research, machinery, sustainable practices and production that goes into crafting RE:FIBRE fabric was eye-opening. When I think of garment production, I think of the final sewing stage where the fabric comes together to make the finished product as that’s typically my upcycling process. But learning exactly what goes into breaking down old textiles - that would potentially have otherwise gone to landfillbefore they become something new was super interesting.”  Andrew says.

Collection

The collection itself reflects the beauty of the RE:FIBRE recycling process, with designs that embody the shredded, depolymerised, repolymerised, and reimagined textiles.

Andrew says “My brand VIVID VISIONS is all about blending the past with the future, so working with PUMA to create a one-off collection made from a ‘new’ recycled fabric was pretty cool. The fabric strips on the sleeves represent the RE:FIBRE yarn that’s been spun from the melted polymers, and the cut off trousers and jacket reflect the transformative process that is RE:FIBRE.”

This fashion experiment comes as a result of the ongoing collaboration between PUMA and the US based upcycler, who is part of PUMA’s Voices of A RE:GENERATION – an initiative that aims to improve transparency and conduct greater communication regarding the brand’s sustainability efforts.

The custom PUMA x VIVID VISIONS one-off collection is the final chapter in Andrews’ creative Thread the Loop campaign, a social content series which aims to raise awareness of PUMA’s efforts toward achieving100% of product polyester used, coming from textile waste”, as PUMA CSO Anne-Laure Descours stated. “Rethinking how we produce garments and experimenting with ways that we can move towards a more circular business model is one of the main priorities of our sustainability strategy.”

Since the launch of the pilot in 2022, PUMA has produced recycled training jerseys for Manchester City, AC Milan, Olympique de Marseille and Borussia Dortmund. This month, PUMA have announced they’ve scaled up the textile recycling innovation. In 2024 official PUMA football replica jerseys* including those for the Euro and Copa América tournaments will be manufactured using RE:FIBRE recycled materials, made from old garments and factory waste rather than only recycled plastic bottles

PALERMO, PALERMO, PALERMO! PUMA TAPS FC PALERMO FOR NEW COLLABORATION

PUMA continues the ongoing celebration of the classic Palermo sneaker, this time connecting with partners Palermo FC for a special-edition makeup.

For this special colorway, the Palermo sneaker appears in pink and black team colors, elevated with clinical finishing like Italian-flag lace tips and the Rosanero’s eagle-shaped club emblem stamped on the heel. Hometown hero and Palermo FC striker Alessandra Impellitteri is the face of the new campaign, captured at the home of Palermo FC, the storied Stadio Renzo Barbera.

The timeless low-top Palermo retains its characteristic tag on the upper and a T-toe construction. Remaining faithful to its original design, the sneaker’s pink upper rests on a gum sole.

The new Palermo x Palermo FC collaboration honors the PUMA Palermo’s heritage and popularity in the terraces of ‘80s football culture.

Impellitteri joins the likes of Jack Grealish and Dua Lipa who laced up the PUMA Palermo for part one and part two of the Forever Palermo campaign earlier this year.

The PUMA x Palermo FC Palermo is available starting December 1, 2023, from PUMA.com, PUMA flagship stores, and selected PUMA stockists, while there is much more to come from PUMA and the Palermo in 2024.

Rihanna’s Creeper is Back

Rihanna’s iconic creeper is finally back. But this time, it’s bigger, bolder and phatter than ever.  Imagined, designed, and named by Rihanna, the Creeper Phatty takes the classic Creeper to the extreme with an oversized design, stacked gum sole, and bold pops of color. This new twist on the FENTY x PUMA Creeper is available in three colors for all ages and genders, a full family affair.

Phatty stands for extra confidence, extra style, extra everything. Rihanna’s vision was to bring the Creeper back but in a bold and culturally relevant way. The original Creeper launched back in September of 2015, a platformed version of PUMA’s iconic Suede sneaker.  This silhouette was named Shoe of the Year by Footwear News in 2016 and not only transformed sneaker culture but sparked PUMA’s brand impact and relevance over the past decade.

The Crepper Phatty is wrapped in suede, with a padded and debossed formstrip, debossed Fenty logo on the tongue, laces with gold aglets, and a stacked gum sole. This drop offers three distinct colorways – iconic black and white, extra-bright blue and green, and lavender and cherry red.

“We took our OG Creeper and made it bigger and badder, ” said Rihanna. “When designing the Creeper Phatty we wanted to reinvent the OG Creeper that was loved by so many. It’s a classic silhouette that has been missed, so it’s return had to be bigger.”

As Creative Director, Rihanna’s second FENTY x PUMA campaign -- shot by Philippa Price who previously has shot for both Rihanna and PUMA – explores the juxtaposition between a creep and a phatty attitude highlighting the oversized and bright elements of the shoe.

“The original Creeper changed the game for us,” said Maria Valdes, Chief Product Officer at PUMA.  “We knew it was time to bring it back. This shoe has universal appeal and we’ve seen tremendous consumer excitement for the silhouette to return. We are excited to not only be able to build upon the existing silhouette with the Creeper Phatty but also expand our offering to the entire family.”

The FENTY x PUMA Creeper Phatty will be available worldwide on puma.com and global retailers including Foot Locker beginning 30 November 2023 at 10am EST.

PUMA CELEBRATES THE ANNIVERSARY OF TOMMIE SMITH'S ICONIC GESTURE AT THE 1968 OLYMPICS

Global sports company PUMA celebrates 55 years since the iconic Silent Gesture made by Tommie Smith at the 1968 Olympics on October 16th. In honor of this special date, PUMA launches the ‘Icons of Unity’ collection, and an exclusive interview with the brand’s ambassadors: Colin Jackson, former track and field athlete and Olympic silver medalist, Felix Streng, Paralympic gold and silver medalist and World and European Champion, and Tommie Smith, former track and field athlete and Olympic gold medalist.

In 1968, at the Mexico City Olympics, American sprinter Tommie Smith made history with his Silent Gesture. After receiving his gold medal for the 200-meter race, Smith raised a gloved fist in a powerful symbol against racial injustice and discrimination in the United States. Smith's Silent Gesture remains a symbol of athlete activism and an enduring statement against social inequality.

PUMA has always been committed to removing barriers in sports. In the ‘Icons of Unity’ collection, diverse graphic designs were incorporated into timeless styles to convey Tommie Smith's four fundamental messages: Justice, Dignity, Equality, and Peace.

The video interview featuring Colin Jackson, Felix Streng, and Tommie Smith provides some exclusive insights into the enduring importance of justice, equality, dignity and peace within the realm of sports. These discussions touch upon Tommie Smith’s history with PUMA, being an icon and inspiration for others, as well as their future aspirations.

“If a person is on the right track, the track in front is already laid because all they have to do is follow what they already have in their mind to do. And that peace, justice, equality, and dignity certainly drives a person forward, especially our younger generation, like sitting here”, said Tommie Smith during his interview. “It gives them an idea of: “oh, maybe I am on the right track.” But you had to continue that track. Don't jump off of somebody else's track because the train might be coming your way. Just keep doing what you're doing and think with a positive attitude.”

PUMA AND STAPLE’S “EAST WEST IVY” COLLECTION IS AT THE TOP OF ITS CLASS

PUMA and STAPLE continue their collaboration with the “East West Ivy” collection, which explores Asian American culture through the lens of 1960s collegiate style trends.

During this era, many fashion trends were inspired by the preppy collegiate style of US coastal universities – including the early generations of Asian American student communities. Taking inspiration from this time period, the PUMA x STAPLE East West Ivy collection brings together 60’s Asian-American collegiate aesthetics with the New York City streetwear roots of STAPLE.

These two movements are translated through classic, varsity-inspired chenille badges and premium materials, combined with traditional iconography from Asian cultures. These elements are displayed across a range of collegiate silhouettes including caps, jackets, hoodies and T shirts.

“We’re excited to team up with PUMA again on a collection that brings together Asian American culture, classic collegiate style, and our streetwear roots in New York City” says Jeff Staple. “These elements have been translated into timeless pieces that truly embody STAPLE as a brand.”

PUMA

The collection’s highlights include cut-and-sew items like the Varsity Jacket and V-Neck Crew, both of which channel classic Americana with a letter-jacket aesthetic, bearing “P” and “S” for PUMA and STAPLE, respectively. The accompanying Hoodie, Sweatpants, and Graphic Tees are emblazoned with specially created graphics and logos, once again drawing inspiration from Asian American cultures.

The footwear offerings include two colorways each of the PUMA Suede and Slipstream. Envisioned through STAPLE’s lens, the shoes feature re-worked elements like zig-zag shaped eye stays, debossed gold lettering, and yin-yang symbols on the tongue, while each sneaker comes affixed with PUMA Jumping Cat hardware in gold.

Lastly, accessories include a lecture hall-ready Duffle Bag, as well as a Beanie and Cap.

The PUMA x STAPLE “East West Ivy” collection is available starting October 19 on PUMA.com, PUMA flagship stores, and select PUMA stockists, and on staplepigeon.com on October 17.
