PUMA supplies most national teams at the Africa Cup of Nations
Sport
It is on! After the postponement last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finally kicked off this week. The tournament is hosted by Cameroon and runs from January 9 to February 6, 2022. All in all, twenty-four teams are ready in the competition. PUMA supplies five teams, more than any other brand: Senegal, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco and Egypt. The latter is the most successful nation in the cup’s history, winning the tournament seven times. She made it! PUMA Athlete and crossfitter Emma McQuaid just won the largest fitness festival. Emma finished ahead of over 40 of the best female CrossFit athletes in the world and was crowned as the winner of Wodapalooza 2022. Congratulations Emma to this STRONG performance!
This victory for Emma comes just five months after she finished 12th in the world at last year’s CrossFit Games – comparable to the Olympics in the discipline. At the Wodapalooza competition Emma had been impressive since day one. After a big day two which included an event win on The Bayside Chipper, she moved from sixth into second place on the leader board. She was steady and consistent, chipping away all weekend. Emma managed to make it to the lead at the final event.
The 2022 Wodapalooza boasted the largest prize purse in the competition’s history – Emma received $100,000 for her victory.
“It was incredible. I enjoyed every single event, and the atmosphere was amazing.” – said Emma after the contest.
Emma is currently ranked sixth globally and is holding the fittest woman in Ireland title. She has now set her sights on a top 10 finish at the 2022 CrossFit Games in August.

Sport
Not just a hype! This racket sport is taking the world by storm. Let´s talk about padel tennis! In this article we will make you familiar with the rules of the sport that can be described as a cross between tennis and squash. The great advantage of padel is that it is suitable for all ages, since it is not dependent on strength and serving competency. Padel is more about strategy and cooperation between you and your partner, rather than power. And, there is another special reason to talk about padel. We welcomed our first professional padel tennis player, Momo Gonzalez, to the PUMA Family! Momo is a player of great quality and currently number 16 in the world. Senegal decided the all-PUMA final of the Africa Cup of Nations in a penalty thriller against Egypt on Sunday night, winning Africa’s most important trophy in football for the first time.
For PUMA it has been a great event. No sports company supplied more teams during the Africa Cup of Nations than we did, with Senegal, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, and Egypt all featuring leaping cats on their jerseys.
Senegal were on the attack from the outset. After only four minutes, they were already given a penalty but did not take the early lead thanks to a superb save by the Egyptian keeper. They continued as the more offensive side throughout the match but Egypt’s defense was tight and the Lions of Teranga failed to get in the final touch to score a goal. With the score still 0-0 after 120 minutes, the game went to penalties, which Senegal won 4-2.
After a slow start to the tournament in the group phase, Senegal powered through the knock-out stages of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations by beating Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea and Burkina Faso to reach Sunday’s final. As the team lost the AFCON final in 2019, it was a great moment for the country when their team captain PUMA player Kalidou Koulibaly lifted the trophy for the first time in Senegal’s history.
Egypt on the other hand had to go into extra time in all of their three knock-out matches (Ivory Coast, Morocco and Cameroon) this year and had to decide a game on penalties twice.
Egypt and Senegal will meet again later this year for two matches to decide who will participate in the World Cup.
