PUMA Team Palmeiras wins Copa Libertadores

Sport PUMA Team Palmeiras on Saturday won the Copa Libertadores, the highest trophy in club football in Latin America, after beating Santos 1-0 in a tight final in Rio de Janeiro. For Palmeiras it is the second Copa Libertadores title. The last time the team from São Paulo, Brazil won, was more than 20 years ago in 1999. It was a very tight and physical match in Rio’s famous Maracanã stadium until the 9th minute of stoppage time, when Palmeiras player Breno Lopes headed a skilful cross by Rony into the far corner of the goal. Breno Lopes had come off the bench just a few minutes earlier. “There is nothing in this world, not money and nothing else that could pay for the deep sense of gratitude we feel at this moment,” Palmeiras goalkeeper and PUMA Player Weverton said after the match. Weverton made an important save in the 77th minute to keep his team in the game. The Copa Libertadores has been held every year since 1960 and includes teams from all over Latin America. Palmeiras posted the video below on Twitter, where you can see the players singing “O Maraca é nosso” (Maracanã is ours) in the dressing room.   PUMA Brazil posted this video on social media to celebrate the victory and the striking green shirt of Palmeiras. “People saw it, from all sides and in all ways. In everything that is green in the whole country. People saw this shirt make history. Green is the color of America,” the clip says.     From all of us at PUMA: Congratulations on this amazing achievement, Palmeiras! PUMA Team Palmeiras wins Copa Libertadores

PUMA Team the Vodacom Blue Bulls win South African Rugby trophy Currie Cup

Sport South African Rugby Team the Vodacom Blue Bulls, a PUMA team, on Saturday won the Currie Cup, South Africa’s main domestic rugby union competition, by beating the Sharks 26-19 in a dramatic final. For the Vodacom Blue Bulls it is the first win of this trophy since 2009. And the Vodacom Blue Bulls, who are from the South African city of Pretoria, didn’t make things easy for themselves, as they were 10 points down in the second half! Arno Botha, who wears the PUMA Future boot, scored the first of two tries that day to get the Vodacom Blue Bulls back into the game but with only two minutes to go in regular play, they were still two points behind. With the seconds ticking down the clock, the Vodacom Blue Bulls then converted a penalty to make it 19-19 and get into extra time. In the second half of extra time, with just a few seconds remaining on the clock, it was once again Arno Botha who rammed his way across the line to score the winning try. For the Vodacom Blue Bulls, it is the 24th victory in the Currie Cup, which dates back to 1891! Another great victory in what has been a very successful weekend for PUMA teams around the world! At the Word Athletics Indoor Tour Gold Meeting in Karsruhe, Germany, the ISTAF Indoor in Düsseldorf, Germany (both events were sponsored by PUMA) and the Indoor Athletics Meeting in Tourcoing, France. We saw several wins and personal bests for PUMA athletes at these events. Under strict hygiene requirements and unfortunately without an audience, it was still possible to hold high-class competitions. Sport PUMA athlete Yaroslava Mahuchikh set a new Ukrainian national record in the high jump at the indoor meeting in the Slovakian town of Banska Bystrica on Tuesday by clearing 2.06 meters. It was also the best performance by any female athlete in 2021. At only 19 years of age, Yaroslava has already managed a string of impressive performances. In 2017 she took the gold at the U-18 World Championships, before coming in second at the World Championships in Doha in 2019. She also holds the U20 world records in the high jump for both the indoor and the outdoor event. With a jump of 2.06, she is only 3 centimeters shy of equalling the world record in the high jump, which was set by Bulgarian athlete Stefka Kostadinova in 1987 at the World Championships in Rome, long before Yaroslava was born. As 2021 is an important year for track and field with the Olympic Games coming up, we look forward to seeing more inspiring performances from our PUMA athlete Yaroslava!     View this post on Instagram   A post shared by World Athletics (@worldathletics) PUMA Athlete Yaroslava Mahuchikh sets best performance of 2021 in high jump, wi…

PUMA signs new pole vault athletes to join record holder “Mondo” Duplantis

Sport PUMA has signed several new pole vault athletes who will join world record holder Armand “Mondo” Duplantis as the company’s ambassadors in this sport. Earlier this year, French former Olympic Champion Renaud Lavillenie joined PUMA, together with Poland’s triple medallist at world championships Piotr Lisek, US record holder and and world indoor champion Sandi Morris, and former junior world champions Sweden’s Angelica Bengtsson, and Switzerland’s Angelica Moser. We also signed an agreement with Matvey Volkov, who will compete for Belarus. He cleared 5.60 meters this month to become the best performer of all time at the age of 16. PUMA has always paid special attention to track and field, as it is deeply linked to the company’s history and probably the most pure display of athletic ability there is. “Pole vault is perhaps one of the strongest and most exciting events in all of track and field at this time. Following the signing of Mondo Duplantis, we also had the opportunity to add some top names to the roster on both the men’s and women’s side,” said PUMA’s Head of Sports Marketing Pascal Rolling. With PUMA by his side, Mondo was on fire in 2020. The Swedish pole vaulter broke the world record twice in a week in February (6.17m and 6.18m) before producing the highest outdoor vault in history (6.15m) in September. In December, Mondo was named “Male World Athlete of the Year” by World Athletics. “Mondo, Renaud, and the rest of the current pole vault squad are all jumping in spikes that have been engineered specifically with the athletes’ biomechanics and technical needs for the event in mind. We will continue to strive for further product innovation in our spikes across all track and field events,” Pascal added. Mondo jumped a year best on Wednesday in Belgrad, clearing 6.10m. Renaud has cleared 6m again this year for the first time in years. Both jumpers will again be in action at the indoor European Championships in Torun, Poland next week.
